Through the Director's Eyes | "Her Mother’s Eyes" | Yeimy Daza

“This video is about memory, love, and the silent ways mothers see us — always holding onto that little girl, even as we grow. I feel fortunate to have captured that sentiment, and even more fortunate to have lived it in real time, surrounded by people I care deeply about.”
The stage plot created by Yeimy Daza as she listened to and envisioned how the room for “Her Mother’s Eyes” would be viewed through the lens.

Natalia - my best friend and an incredibly talented actor - stars in this video, and was also getting married this year. Directing her in a story about a bride preparing for her wedding, with her real mother present on set, felt deeply personal. Her mom, Maria, has been a long-time supporter of our work in this wild industry, and having her there, helping behind the scenes, added a layer of love and authenticity I’ll always carry with me.

The role of the mother in the video is played by the one and only Rosanne Baker Thornley (RBT). This marks our third music video collaboration! Each project has deepened our creative trust, but this one, in particular, felt incredibly intimate. The song is written from the perspective of a mother who will always see her daughter as her little girl. Filling the room with real mothers and daughters - Rosanne and her daughter Taylor (our BTS photographer), Natalia and her mom Maria, and Eva Luna and her mom - created a powerful energy. I know that was important for Rosanne, too.

Everything felt very meta: Natalia getting married, her mom being there, Rosanne with her daughter (for whom she wrote the song). It felt like we were in a time capsule of mothers, daughters, and our inner little-girl selves. That feeling is captured in the video - almost like a loop, which is exactly what a wedding day represents. I’ll let you know for sure next year when it’s my turn to get married, haha.

Our original plan was to shoot the video as one continuous slider take - poetic and fluid - but of course, production rarely goes exactly as planned. The slider didn’t cooperate the way we hoped, but we still captured the rhythm and emotion of the concept. In the end, B-roll saved the edit -  a reminder to never underestimate the power of simple, beautiful coverage.

As always, Artem -  my cinematographer, partner, and eyes - brought the vision to reality. The set was overwhelmingly infused with female energy, but his presence balanced the space in a beautiful way. A special moment for me, and I think for the crew as well, was watching him work with the little girl -  making her laugh, helping her feel comfortable with the camera, and running around the studio with her.

Another highlight was working with Eva Luna and her mother Eleany González. This was one of Eva’s first projects, and she absolutely shined. Once you meet her mom, you understand why. They both embody the fresh confidence of Caribbean Latinas from Cuba - something I also carry myself - so it felt like working with family. I left that day especially proud to have collaborated with more Latinas on set, sharing space with women and mothers whose energy elevated the project.

This video is about memory, love, and the silent ways mothers see us - always holding onto that little girl, even as we grow. I feel fortunate to have captured that sentiment, and even more fortunate to have lived it in real time, surrounded by people I care deeply about. – Yeimy Daza
